So, I’ve been watching and it seems that Zach has recently been sucking his thumb more. I was a bit concerned so I took to the net and did my typical pacifying behavior (because sucking MY thumb wouldn’t be acceptable at this age) and did some research.
Evidently, as children move toward more independence in some ways, they tend to revert a bit in others. So, while Zach is becoming more intentional in letting us know what he needs and/or getting it himself, he might be upping the thumb sucking for reassurance and comfort.
Another factor may be that we are currently in the process of moving and the one place that has never changed on him is now filled with boxes and looks different in every way. He might need just a little extra familiarity these days and he is finding it oh the edge of his hand.
I’ll keep a look out and see if the behavior continues once things even out a bit before I jump into action. I would like to see a little more language development occurring and thumb sucking certainly won’t help that.
Parenthood… it’s always something.
