On Friday, I made the tough decision to turn the car seat around. On Saturday we were rear ended.
I'm afraid that is just how it happens sometimes.
As most of us know, up until the last couple years, babies sat in rear facing car seats until they were one and then they were allowed to be turned around to face forward. Then the powers-that-be decided that this change shouldn't occur until age two.
Waiting until one- no big deal.
Waiting until two- pretty rough.
I decided a long time ago that I would make the push to last until AT LEAST 18 months and then go from there. Some moms just go ahead and turn at right around a year. Others are champs and make it until two.
Last Friday, I had anxiety attacks picturing, in my head, turning Zach around and then getting in a car wreck. The bottom line though was that he was uncomfortable facing backward and screamed if we went any farther than across town. We were preparing for a four hour road trip. The time was now.
So we turned him on Friday and on Saturday we were rear ended.
And he is perfectly fine.
As it says on the What to Expect website... "the “age 2” recommendation is not a deadline, but rather a guideline to help parents make a decision about when to make the transition."
Some kids do fine with waiting until two but most pediatricians will tell you- if they start showing signs of distress facing backwards then its time to turn them around.
Parental decisions are not for the weak-at-heart.
