I used to hear this from people and be struck with fear and frustration. UGH-but I like consistency and this is the very opposite of consistency.
What I have recently found is that this saying, phrase, warning, whatever- actually carries with it a sense of relief in addition to the foreboding. Yea- you can’t expect that baby to keep the same schedule always, or sleep the same number of hours, or enjoy his peas quite the same way BUT it also means that if he’s being a real pain in the rearing that whininess, spitting at you, sleeplessness will also pass.
This is especially helpful for me to remember when I start feeling that scary, “I’m not cut out for this” feeling when the baby is being particularly difficult. This too will pass.
