...I would argue that it is sometimes the pain in things that make you appreciate them the most... it is my unconditional willingness to endure the middle-of-the-night feedings, the cleaning up of vomit, the screaming for no good reason, etc that makes me realize how much I love my child and love raising him...

Finger Nails/ Toe Nails

Yea, those little boogers are born with nails and sometimes long ones at that. In the hospital, they typically use and send you home with this little fine grain emery board. Those aren’t helpful.

When they grow pretty long in the womb, they are so soft that they start curling over their fingers. There isn’t much you can do about those early on. Eventually they will grow enough that they will stick up more and you can nab them at that point.

The fine grain emery boards are worthless. I quickly moved to a bigger grain so that the job could be done faster and more effectively. This causes some people concern about it hurting the baby, etc. Use your common sense- yes, if you are taking skin with it you are probably doing it too hard. I tested it on myself and it didn’t hurt at all.

Generally they say to stay away from clippers because aim is hard with them being so tiny and it is easy to cut their fingers which could then lead to infection. You really just need to judge this yourself. I have friends that used clippers from very early on and their babies’ fingers and toes survived. For me, the emery board was easier and less anxiety producing.

Some suggestions from me and my other mommy friends:
  • Do their nails after a bath- it softens the nail
  • Do their nails while they are sleeping so they aren’t squirming etc
  • Do their nails while they are taking a bottle (or breastfeeding) so they are preoccupied with something else
