I have a good friend that is soon to go into labor with her first child. Feeling some pangs of anxiety of the impending pain (and of course knowing that I am no expert and that everyone’s experience is different), she e-mailed me with questions concerning my experience with labor… here is one exchange:
Did you get an epidural, what do you think about pain medication?
I did end up getting an epidural but I waited until I was nearing the very end of my labor- I was already fully dilated and fully effaced. I was actually lucky that they let me get one and that it took before I delivered. I am generally very liberal on the topic of pain medication- I think it is a very personal decision and I don’t see a problem with it either way. Some people worry about actually getting the epidural- when you are in labor and want an epidural, the last thing you are thinking about is the needle. I think that as long as the medicine is well administered there really isn’t a problem with it. Some people say it makes for sleepy babies- Zach wasn’t. Some people say they had side effects from the epidural- I didn’t. I was up, walking within an hour from them taking me off the medicine. Of course there are those horror stories out there but that it true for both sides. I think the most important thing is for you to have confidence in your decision.
