...I would argue that it is sometimes the pain in things that make you appreciate them the most... it is my unconditional willingness to endure the middle-of-the-night feedings, the cleaning up of vomit, the screaming for no good reason, etc that makes me realize how much I love my child and love raising him...

Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease

Oh yea. We got it.

In my house, this was somewhat of a non-issues. A few bumps on his hands and feet- that’s all. But for other houses- it is torture. Please share in the comments if it was torture at your house!

A couple notes:
1.       When it is identified that your child has it, know that it’s severity varies greatly and you might be one of the lucky ones. Don’t worry about it until it reveals how much fun it is going to be.
2.       It evidently usually skips one: the hands, feet, or mouth. It skipped the mouth at my house- from the stories I have heard, the mouth seems to be the worst with the feet second if they are walking (but I don’t have experience with that- all hearsay).
3.       If it is severe in their mouth- a mom acquaintance that found out that my baby had it called me the night she found out to share this helpful tip: mix equal parts Benadryl and Maalox and rub it topically on the sores in the mouth. It relieves the itchiness and stinging. Apparently it works miracles- her daughter wasn’t eating because her mouth was bothering her so bad and within two hours she was eating. She said that she did it on the hand bumps as well but it didn’t seem to help as much as in the mouth.

  1. When my kid was little he got this. It wasn't too bad for him. I asked his dr. if it was contagious and she said "only to kids". Great. 1-2 days later I had red dots all over my hands and feet and the worst mouth sores/fever. I went to my dr and he said "it's very rare for adults to get it". Gee thanks. I've had pretty severe cases of strep and the hfm is by far worse.
